A category B driver's license is one of the most popular licenses obtained in Poland and around the world. For many people, it is the first step toward independence and mobility. Although it is most often associated with the ability to drive a passenger car, category B offers many more powers. In this article, we'll take a closer look at what you can drive while holding this license and what additional opportunities it offers.
1. driving cars
The basic entitlement of a category B driver's license is the ability to drive passenger cars. This applies to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight not exceeding 3.5 tons, which can carry a maximum of 9 people (including the driver). It is this type of vehicle that is most often used on a daily basis by category B license holders, both for private and professional purposes.
2. driving vans
A category B driver's license also entitles you to drive vans with a gross vehicle weight of less than 3.5 tons. This is a popular option among small entrepreneurs and those engaged in smaller-scale transportation. However, it is worth remembering that commercial transportation of goods may require additional authorizations or licenses, depending on the type of activity.
3. driving with a trailer
With a category B driver's license, you can also drive sets consisting of a passenger car and a trailer. In this case, there are two scenarios:
- The usual lightweight trailer - you can pull a light trailer, the weight of which does not exceed 750 kg, even if the weight of the whole set (car + trailer) exceeds 3.5 tons.
- Trailer heavier than 750 kg - You can pull a trailer, the weight of which exceeds 750 kg, provided that the total weight of the combination does not exceed 3.5 tons.
If the total weight of the kit exceeds 3.5 tons, it is necessary to have a B+E category license or take additional training that allows you to drive heavier kits.
4. driving three-wheelers
Category B also entitles the holder to drive three-wheeled vehicles of no more than 15 kW. If the holder of a B driver's license is at least 21 years old, he or she can also drive three-wheeled vehicles with more power. This is interesting for people who want to use alternative means of transportation, such as three-wheeled scooters or three-wheeled motorcycles.
5. motorcycles up to 125 cm³
A Category B driver's license, which has been valid for at least 3 years, entitles you to drive motorcycles with an engine capacity of up to 125 cm³ and a power output of up to 11 kW. This privilege was introduced in Poland in 2014 and is popular among people who want to use motorcycles for short distances without having to obtain additional licenses.
6. agricultural tractors and slow-moving vehicles
Holders of a category B driver's license may drive agricultural tractors and slow-moving vehicles, such as excavators and road rollers. However, this only applies to driving on public roads. No driver's license is required for work in enclosed areas, such as farm fields.
7. electric and hybrid cars
A category B driver's license also entitles the holder to drive electric and hybrid cars, provided their gross vehicle weight does not exceed 3.5 tons. With the rapid development of the electric vehicle market, this entitlement is becoming increasingly important, especially in the context of the pursuit of sustainability and ecology.
8. additional training and authority extensions
Having a category B driver's license also opens the door to acquiring additional licenses through specialized courses. An example is a course for a B+E category license, which allows you to drive rigs with trailers with a higher gross weight. You can also apply for other driving license categories, such as C (trucks) or D (buses).
Summary
A category B driver's license is not only the ability to drive a passenger car, but also a wide range of other privileges. From driving vans to agricultural tractors to small-capacity motorcycles, the possibilities are truly numerous. That's why it's a good idea to know all the options that come with having this document in order to take full advantage of its potential. It's also worth considering expanding your privileges through additional courses, which can open up new professional and recreational opportunities.
